Baccalaureate schools

Baccalaureate schools prepare students for further education at tertiary level, namely at a university. There are Baccalaureate schools in all cantons. The Confederation and the cantons jointly regulate the recognition of Baccalaureate schools.

Recognition is based on the Regulation of Baccalaureates (MAR) issued by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK) and the Federal Council’s Ordinance on the Recognition of Baccalaureates (MAV). In order to ensure examination-free access to higher education and the comparability of Baccalaureate certificates throughout Switzerland in the long term, the Confederation and cantons completely revised the previous national recognition principles from 1995 in 2023 and brought them into force on 1 August 2024, together with the revised national framework curriculum. The new principles will be implemented in the cantons.

The Baccalaureate certificates issued under the previous law are still valid until at least 2032. The following explanations therefore refer to the legal basis from 1995.
